The Benefit of Attending FREE in-Person Events
After a few skipped events, I attended a local .NET user group event this week.
I got a lot out of it. The speaker was great, the topic fascinating, and the 1-on-1 discussions after the talk were even more valuable.
Once again, I got motivated to finally learn F# and explore how it helps write more type-safe and better refactorable business software.
On my way back, I sat on the train and thought about the great event and what I took from it.
Then I realized it.
I know about 20-50 developers around my area, and I’m the only one regularly attending those .NET user group events.
And I asked myself why.
It’s a pity. You connect with people from different companies in your area, and you’ll always learn new things from the presentations.
I wish more of my developer friends had access to those events.
Well, they have access - it’s free. But they choose to skip them.
And again, I wonder why.
It turns out that people do not want to commit to attending real-world events as much as they did a few years ago.
Some of the reasons are other distracting activities. But most of the time, people don’t value free stuff.
They prefer attending a $1000 1-day course paid for by their companies instead of meeting like-minded people for free.
Anyway, I digress.
This week, I wanted to prompt you to search your local area for .NET developer events - user group meetings, or other exciting activities that help you advance your career and learn new things.
A great starting point is meetup.com.
